Strictly Confidential

Producer: Bob Stewart
Host: Dick Clark
Announcer: Johnny Gilbert
Celebrities: Robert Mandan, Elaine Joyce, Bill Cullen, Betty White, Jay Johnstone, Soupy Sales
Taping Info: 1980, probably Los Angeles
Made it to Air: No

Here, as an exclusive to The Game Show Pilot Light, is the Bob Stewart pilot checklist:

  • ___ Recycle a previous theme
  • ___ Recycle parts of a previous set
  • ___ Recycle the host
  • ___ If the above is not Bill Cullen, make sure he's on the panel
  • ___ Make sure there are as many or more celebrities than contestants
  • ___ Tweak a previous idea for the main game
  • ___ Use another game as the bonus game

This one has it, as the theme from The Love Experts plays and parts of Riddlers appear on the screen, Dick Clark comes out, acknowledges Bill Cullen and five other celebrities along with the two contestants as they come out to play To Tell the Truth. Later, they'll play the bonus game to The Face is Familiar.

I really shouldn't rag on Mr. Stewart here, because Strictly Confidential isn't that bad of the game. The celebrities of one team are given some statement that needs completing, and the three each give an answer. Only one is true, and the celebrities of the one team plus the contestant try to guess which celebrity was correct. If the vote is a tie, the contestant's pick is the tie-breaker. Winning some amount of games moved you to the bonus game, which involved answering general knowledge questions that removed part of a picture of a famous person. Guessing the famous person won you the grand prize.

Overall not a bad little effort, but the syndication field was very crowded in 1981 and I can see why this was lost in the shuffle. Dick Clark does a very good Dick Clark, and the celebrities are entertaining.
